CHANGE ME: A Prayer for Transformation

“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time- waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God- it changes me.” C. S. Lewis

My father in heaven,

You are the unchanging God, compassionate, merciful and perfect in love. Come to me is your call and I am coming now with my stuff, knowing you will meet me right here and knowing you won’t ever leave me right here the same.

You are the unchanging God who changes everything.

Change me today. I try various ways to better myself, you know every thought, motive and effort involved. But today I am weary of longing and laboring for the changes you offer. I feel helplessly stuck in patterns of defeat. But my hope is in you. You will come for me, you always come for me and I am lifting my face now with great expectation. You are faithful and true and give you permission to reshape and remake me in way you see fit. Nothing is off limits to you.

Align my spirit with yours. Strip me of everything false. Give me an undivided heart fully yielded to your will. Let love rule my heart and desires.

Take control of my attitude. I quickly slip into default mode here. I need you to override the angry undertones, low grade irritation, the entitlement. Give me a hard re-set here so I can treat others the way you want them treated. Let me be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger.

Give me a steadfast mind. Mine wanders and over analyzes, hold space for worry, doubt or fear. Renew my thoughts to be pleasing to you and nourishing to my own soul.

Correct my ways. I cling to them rigidly but you are always changing things up and I don’t want to resent you for that. Your ways are mercy and justice and it’s always worth making adjustments for that in real life with real people.

Change the way I view people different from me. You love them and they are worthy of love and connection. I don’t want to stand in the way of what you have for them. And I don’t want to miss out on the gifts they have for me.

Change my tone of voice. You know my trigger moments. And you know the deep need beneath each trigger and I trust you will meet me here as well. You desire truth and healing in my inner most parts. be welcome here. I release any anger, any desire or right to remain the same.

May I only ever speak life. May you be my source, comfort, delight.

Reveal any error in my thinking, any false affection and desire, any way I am harming myself by not trusting your perfect way for me.

Change me, Lord.

Align my spirit with yours. Mark me with your love. Cover me with your faithfulness. Continue the good work you have started in me.

May I rest in knowing that you love me unconditionally, lavishly right now just as I am while believing and trusting I will not remain the same. No one who encounters your presence remains the same.

I am grateful I can always enter it, freely, with joy.

I love you.

Amen

    Astrid,

I was led to your blog from our COMPEL Iron group. I’ve looked at several of your post and found them all to be heartwarming, but this truly spoke to me and I had to reply. It is like you were praying my prayer, saying everything I need to say to the Lord. It is so heartfelt and empowering. I’m waiting for the “unchanging Lord to change me.”
